A Beginner’s Guide to Anchor Texts

As a beginner, it can seem impossible to figure out what to do with anchor texts in your SEO strategy. However, we promise it’s not as daunting as it seems.

If you’re confused by the anchor text question, all you need is this handy guide. We’ll break down all the basics you need to know to work with anchor texts effectively. Keep reading to learn more!

What Are Anchor Texts?

An anchor text is the clickable set of words that form a link from one site to another. It’s that simple! However, knowing how to use them effectively as part of your SEO strategy is another story. Don’t worry – in this guide, we’ll go over that too.

Anchor Text Types

There are a number of different kinds of anchor text you can use. Let’s go over what they are.

1. Exact Match

If you use an “exact match” anchor text, you’re using the specific keyword or key phrase that you’re trying to rank for as the anchor.

2. Partial Match

In a partial match anchor text, the keyword or phrase is located somewhere within the anchor text.

3. Brand

In this case, the anchor text would be your brand’s name.

4. Naked URL

A “naked” anchor text isn’t a word or phrase, but simply the URL of the site it’s linking to.

5. Generic

A generic anchor text doesn’t use a specific brand name or keyword, but a generic phrase like “this site” or “this brand.”

6. LSI Keyword

In this case, the anchor text is a synonym for the target keyword or is otherwise related to the target.

Of course, these are just a few of the most common anchor text types. People may also use the name of the author, the page’s title, or image links as an anchor text.

Anchor Texts and Search Engines

An anchor text wouldn’t matter if search engines didn’t care. However, the anchor text is an important factor in SEO for your site.

Search engines like Google use an anchor text to figure out what a page’s topic is, and therefore, the keywords that page should rank for.

However, this is a bit of a simplification. Although Google does believe that linked sites should rank for the anchor text used for the link, it doesn’t rely on anchor text in the same simple way that it once did.

Over-Relying on Anchor Text

Once upon a time, Google actually relied too heavily on anchor text as an indicator of what a site was about.

The original algorithm placed a strong emphasis on anchors. However, this strategy was too easy for sites to manipulate. To get a page ranked, all one had to do was get a number of links to it with an anchor text that was their target keyword.

The site with the most keyword-heavy anchors would win out in the rankings above the competition. However, the pages that the links pointed to weren’t necessarily relevant, which created an issue.

Google’s Updates

Google realized their problem and made changes accordingly. Gradually, they weighed anchor text less heavily in the algorithm.

Then, in April 2012, the Google Penguin update was announced. This punished sites for manipulative, low-quality link strategies. Anchor texts were one of the main targets of the update.

Sites that had been using anchor text in this spammy way suddenly had their rankings take a nosedive.

Smart Anchor Text SEO

With all of that in mind, what’s the smart way to use anchor text as part of your SEO game?

One thing you can’t control is how other sites create an anchor text to link to your site. You can try to encourage certain practices, but the only thing you can guarantee is the behavior on your own site.

Now, let’s take a look at how to use anchor texts the smart way on your website.

1. Keep it Succinct

Short anchor texts are better than long ones. There’s no limit to length, but keeping the terms short and focused is a good look for your site.

Ask yourself: What is the most accurate, yet quick way to reference the site you’re linking? What phrase would best entice users to click on that link? Frame your anchors around those questions, and you’ll have a good strategy.

2. Consider Relevancy

An important metric Google now uses in its rankings is link relevancy. This means the site or page you link to should be relevant to the page you’re linking from. Otherwise, it seems spammy, and Google may punish you.

With a relevant link, both pages are more likely to get ranked for that topic. It’s a win-win situation. Link relevancy should ideally happen naturally: if you’re linking to something in a page, it’s because that page is a useful resource for more information on the subject.

You can heighten the relevancy by selecting an anchor text that’s relevant to the subject at hand, as well.

3. Don’t Keyword Stuff

Keyword-stuffing is a bad SEO practice in general, and it applies to anchor links, too.

With the Penguin update, keyword density in anchor texts was taken into serious consideration. If there were too many inbound links to a site that had the same anchor text, the links appeared unnatural, and Google often punished that site.

The same holds true today. Although it’s generally good to get as many anchor texts as you can with specific keywords, you don’t want to overdo it. Having a number of natural-sounding anchors is better than having a ton of exact matches that might trip Google up.

One more thing to be careful with is the keyword-specific internal link. Since you’re linking to your own site, it can be tempting to throw in keywords wherever possible. However, avoid using the same anchor text for too many internal links – Google might see it as spammy.

How Will You Use Anchor Text?

Most of the time, anchor text is your friend. Just avoid spammy or spam-like practices, and you’ll be fine.

Best Keyword Research Tools (Free and Premium)

Do you want to flood your site with organic traffic? Well, the secret to getting targeted organic traffic is using long tail keywords and LSI keywords in your content strategy. In today’s post, I will show you the best tools to perform keyword research and find out the ones that will bring you loads of search traffic. There are dozens of tools that help you to come up with the right keywords that have buyer intent and decent searches per month. In this post, I will introduce some of the best-in-class keyword research tools that help you boost your search traffic.

Best Keyword Research Tools 2018:

1. Google Keyword Planner (Free)

Google keyword planner is a part of the Google adwords. It is the most popular and free keyword research tool out there. Almost any blogger, newbie or seasoned in SEO can use Google keyword planner to find out related keywords along with their search quantity.Get Some Awesome SEO Quotes Here.

Though the GKP was created for the adwords users to search for keywords that they can bid ads for and drive traffic to their sites, you can use it to find tons of related keywords along with their searches per month.

How it works:

To use the GKP, log in with your Google account here.

The next page is where you can enter your seed keyword and customize your filters for the resultant keywords. GKP offers a wide variety of keywords filters like location, language, negative keywords (keywords that you don’t want) etc.

PRO TIP: You can enter URLs of competitors in the landing page tab to view the keywords the web page is ranking for.

2. Keywordtool.io (Free)

Keywordtool.io is what you should be using when you want to get tons of long tail keywords for your seed keywords. This tool gives you keywords based on Google, Bing, Yahoo and apple app store for free. It provides a huge resource of keywords that would otherwise never see the daylight.

How it works:

Keywordtool uses Google’s auto complete and ubersuggest’s letter adding features (more on Ubersuggest in the next point) to pull out such huge keyword variety. Adding alphabets to the beginning and end of your seed keywords gives a natural keyword resource that can be used in your blog posts.

One of the key features of Keywordtool is that it shows you the questions that can be formed using your seed keyword. Thus, you can directly use these questions in creating new blog posts that will give you organic traffic.

Keywordtool is free, but you have to pay (upgrade) to access the search volume, CPC and competition. For beginners, the free version is enough to give you large keyword sets for your keyword research projects.

3. UberSuggest (Free)

Ubersuggest is a basic keyword research tool that gives you more than enough keywords by simply appending letters to the end of your query. This helps you to get access to so many long tail keywords that can be used in your upcoming niche sites or even the main blog.

Ubersuggest has been useful if you have writer’s block too. You can use this tool to get lots of blog posts ideas that will boost your creativity.

How it works:

Ubersuggest works on the principle of Google autosuggest. It appends letters alphabetically to your seed keywords and then finds all the keyword strings that come with the same letter set.

The only reason I said this tool as basic is it gives no idea about the monthly searches or competition of the displayed keywords. You can however, use these keywords in other tools like GKP or long tail pro to find the search volume and competition easily.

4. Serpstat (Paid)

Keyword research is one of 6 tools that online platform Serpstat offers.

There are a couple of different ways to collect keywords there. What is unusual is that Serpstat shows data from Google search suggestions and from your competitors semantics as well.

How it works:

When you type in a certain keyword, you get up to 500 phrases that match the keyword you are interested in.

Information on each phrase is right here - you can explore keyword difficulty, CPC, competition in PPC and search volume.

If you go to Related keywords, you get a list of words that share identical pages in SERP. There are usually synonyms, misspelled words and there are usually plenty of long-tail keywords.

The most reliable way to collect keywords via Serpstat is by exploring competitors semantics. After you find your competitors for a keyword you target, you also get a list of keywords they rank for.

And super easy way to find keywords you should have added is the tool Missing keywords. You’ll see keywords for which your competitors rank in top 10 and which are not present on your website.

So, if you’ve come up with at least one keyword for you website, you can get matched keywords, search suggestions (with search questions), top pages, and competitors for the this keyword.

5. Ahrefs Keywords Explorer (Premium)

Ahrefs holds the top spot when it comes to keyword diversity and localization.

With 5.1 billion keywords for 200+ countries in its database, it can give you keyword ideas you’d never think of yourself.

How it works:

Just type in your seed keyword and switch between five keyword suggestion algorithms depending on your needs.

Here’s what they reveal:

  • phrases containing your seed keyword as is;
  • phrases that contain terms of your seed key phrase in any order;
  • other keywords that Top 10 pages for your seed keyword also rank for;
  • search queries that Google’s Autocomplete suggests;
  • recently detected phrases with your exact-match seed keyword.
Every algorithm will give you thousands of ideas for a single seed keyword.

No worries. With a rich set of filters, you can weed out the trash in a few clicks.

For example, set a low search volume, and you’ll see long-tail phrases that rule the show in modern SEO.

Ahrefs keeps competitors’ keyword strategies out in the open. Whether you’re curious about their high-performing keywords or top pages by traffic, you’ll see them all.

You can also detect what keywords your competitors rank for, but you still don’t and fill in the gap.

Just add their domains to the Content Gap report.

Keyword rankings don't stand still. Enable email alerts to stay tuned for even the minor rise and drop, both of yours and your competitors.

10 Strategies To Get More Visitors To Comment

A 2006 study conducted by the Nielsen Norman Group found that, in most online communities, 90 percent of users are lurkers who never leave a comment, 9 percent will comment occasionally, and only 1 percent of your readers will comment on a regular basis. While these statistics remain pretty steady, there are some things you can do to get more comments on your blog.

1. Ask For Comments: Most of your readers just don’t think about leaving a comment. It’s not that they don’t want to or don’t have anything to say. They just aren’t in that habit. Give them a nudge and ask them to tell you what they think.
2. Ask A Question: Again, give your readers a reason to leave a comment. Some people are shy and some don’t want to appear to be rude and “interrupt.” Ask them a question to let them know you really do want to know what they have to say.

Must Read: How Do You Make Your Site Appear First In Google Search Results?

3. Leave Them Hanging: You don’t have to complete every thought and your post doesn’t always have to come to some kind of conclusion. Don’t leave out key points, but don’t necessarily tell them everything you know. Leave some room for your readers to join in the conversation.
4. Reply To Comments: The first step is to reply, but don’t stop there. Ask another question and keep the momentum going.
5. Post Commenting Rules: Some bloggers have noted an increase in comment activity after they’ve posted some commenting rules or guidelines. Knowing that flamers and trolls aren’t going to be allowed to participate makes your readers feel safe enough to open up with their thoughts and opinions.
6. Show Your Weaknesses: Let your readers see that you’re human, too. Admit that you don’t know everything there is to know and ask them if they can help out the community by sharing their experiences.
7. Be Gracious: Critiques and negative comments are going to happen. Don’t take them personally and accept them gracefully. Never respond in anger on your blog. In fact, the more gracious you are, the more the rest of your readers will disregard those negative comments.

Must Read: The Best Keyword Research Tools for 2018

8. Be Controversial: A controversial post always generates more comments but be careful and be prepared. Always make sure you can back up your controversial viewpoint, don’t just start bashing blindly. And be prepared for controversial come-backs from your commentors.
9. Spotlight Commentors: Use that good comment as springboards for another post and give a shout-out to the person who left it. Everyone loves seeing their name in print and more people will start leaving more valuable comments so they can be the next commentor your highlight.

Must Read: How to Grow Traffic When You Know Nothing About SEO

10. Remove Comment Obstacles: Make it as easy as possible for your readers to leave comments. If they have to register and then log-in to Facebook or Twitter so they can log into your blog to leave a comment, and then include their email address, their link and verify they’re human and… it’s just not worth the hassle. Limit the steps they have to take and you’ll get more comments on your blog.

How To Refresh Old Content For Better SEO Result

One of the dilemmas we all face as bloggers is constantly coming up with new ideas and fresh content for our sites so that our readers have new posts to read and so that the search engine spiders come back frequently.  But while most (if not all) of us are always striving to be the first to post on a hot topic or issue and most of us are spending time to come up with that next great article idea, many of us are guilty of letting our existing content languish and grow stale. I think this is almost as bad as not creating fresh content.

Next great article idea ?

One of the things I do if I am having difficulty coming up with that ‘next great article idea’ is go into my old posts in Edit Mode and see if there is anything about them I can change and improve.  You would be amazed at how your views on topics you have already posted about grow and evolve as you continue to blog. I cannot stress how important it is to periodically go through and update your old posts.  When you save these new versions of your old posts, the search engines treat this almost as if it’s new content and send their bots over for a visit.
In addition to possibly having new points of view or additional comments to make in your old posts, perhaps you have joined some new affiliate programs since you first wrote those older posts and can now find key areas within your old posts to promote these new programs.  Here is an example: Suppose you just joined a new affiliate program that sells health food supplements and, in the past, you wrote an excellent article about the benefits of taking such supplements, but at that time you did not know of this wonderful affiliate program. Go back into your old article and embed some affiliate links from them into your content.
Assuming that the older post of yours is already ranked and getting some traffic, you may be able to increase your affiliate sales by giving the people reading that old post the opportunity to purchase from this new program – an opportunity they didn’t have before.  If you have an older post that is very popular or ranked highly, this tactic lone can really boost your affiliate sales.  Plus, you’ve refreshed your old content and ‘got the attention’ of the spiders again, so to speak.

Linking opportunities on your blog

Another tremendously effective way to refresh old content is to add links to newer content as you go through your old posts.  For example, suppose you have written a great post and in that post in a few places you mentioned the phrase ‘online marketing for beginners’ and somewhere else you wrote the phrase ‘beginners guide to affiliate marketing.’  Since then you wrote an excellent post that teaches beginners about online marketing and what you think really is a definitive beginners guide to affiliate marketing.  Well, go back into that post and hyperlink those phrases to your new article.  By using the aforementioned phrases as anchor text linking to your new post, you help the search engines ‘understand’ what your new post is about and your anchor text provides them with some potential keywords for which you feel your new article should be ranked. You also provide value to the readers of your old post who may need just such a guide to help them get started in this business, but may not know how to find it on your site. And you have helped yourself because you have updated your old content and refreshed it resulting in another potential visit by the search engine spiders to your website and possible increase in rankings of some of your old posts.

How To Add Custom Robots.txt File in Blogger?

Robots.txt is a content record which contains few lines of basic code. It is saved money on the site or blog's server which train the web crawlers to how to file and creep your blog in the list items. That implies you can confine any website page on your blog from web crawlers with the goal that it can't get listed in web search tools like your blog names page, your demo page or whatever other pages that are not as critical to get filed. Keep in mind forget that pursuit crawlers check the robots.txt document before creeping any page.
Each blog hosted on blogger has its default robots.txt file which is something look like this:
User-agent: Mediapartners-Google
Disallow:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /search
Allow: /
Sitemap: http://example.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?orderby=UPDATED

Explanation

This code is divided into three sections. Let’s first study each of them after that we will learn how to add custom robots.txt file in blogspot blogs.
    1. User-agent: Mediapartners-Google
This code is for Google Adsense robots which help them to serve better ads on your blog. Either you are using Google Adsense on your blog or not simply leave it as it is.

    1. User-agent: *
This is for all robots marked with asterisk (*). In default settings our blog’s labels links are restricted to indexed by search crawlers that means the web crawlers will not index our labels page links because of below code.

Disallow: /search
That means the links having keyword search just after the domain name will be ignored. See below example which is a link of label page named SEO.
https://www.blogspotpoint.com/search/label/SEO
And if we remove Disallow: /search from the above code then crawlers will access our entire blog to index and crawl all of its content and web pages.
Must Read: How To Add Twiiter Widgets In Blogger Blog
Here Allow: / refers to the Homepage that means web crawlers can crawl and index our blog’s homepage.

Disallow Particular Post

Now suppose if we want to exclude a particular post from indexing then we can add below lines in the code.
Disallow: /yyyy/mm/post-url.html

Here yyyy and mm refers to the publishing year and month of the post respectively. For example if we have published a post in year 2013 in month of March then we have to use below format.

Disallow: /2013/03/post-url.html
To make this task easy, you can simply copy the post URL and remove the blog name from the beginning.

Disallow Particular Page
If we need to disallow a particular page then we can use the same method as above. Simply copy the page URL and remove blog address from it which will something look like this:

Disallow: /p/page-url.html

    1. Sitemap: http://example.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?orderby=UPDATED
This code refers to the sitemap of our blog. By adding sitemap link here we are simply optimizing our blog’s crawling rate. Means whenever the web crawlers scan our robots.txt file they will find a path to our sitemap where all the links of our published posts present. Web crawlers will find it easy to crawl all of our posts. Hence, there are better chances that web crawlers crawl all of our blog posts without ignoring a single one.

Note: This sitemap will only tell the web crawlers about the recent 25 posts. If you want to increase the number of link in your sitemap then replace default sitemap with below one. It will work for first 500 recent posts.

Sitemap: http://example.blogspot.com/atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500
If you have more than 500 published posts in your blog then you can use two sitemaps like below:
Sitemap: http://example.blogspot.com/atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500
Sitemap: http://example.blogspot.com/atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=500&max-results=1000

How To Add A HTML Sitemap To Blogger Blog

A sitemap page is one of the must have pages on every blog. It helps in a number of ways to increase the user engagement on our blog and makes it more user friendly.

By using the sitemap page, visitors of our blog can easily navigate through the all of our published content under different categories they are interested in.

After using the sitemap page on my blog for a long time now, I can say it is one of the most visited pages on my blog. When visitors find out the content on your blog more useful, they hunt for more content like this on your blog and if a sitemap page is available on your blog, what else do they need more?

Google Drive has Stopped Hosting so I have updated JavaScript file to another hosting service which is free called YourJavaScript.com ! Please note that this hosting provider does not use HTTPS so these codes may not work on blogger sub domain names but will work fine with custom domain names.

Most of the template designers who are selling blogger templates on ThemeForest.com use his scripts to add amazing functionalities and awesome features to their templates.

Visit DTE Project on Googlecode to find out all of his creations including the Tabbed Table of Content code I am about to share today.

Please note that I did not add any new functionalities or modified this sitemap code but I just played with the CSS code to give it an elegant look and to match the color theme of my blog.

You can do the same and I'll explain it in detailed steps. Lets begin the process.

Step 1. Create A New Page On Your Blog

First of all just create a new page on your blog then change the page settings and switch to HTML mode. Enter the name of the page as "Sitemap" in the Title area to get the same permalink for your new page.

Step 2. Copy And Paste The Whole JavaScript and CSS Code

When you'll switch to the HTML mode, you'll see the few lines of HTML code inside the post editor already added by default so just select those all and remove them. Now paste the whole code given below in the post editor. For further customization and to match the color scheme of your blog, read the Editing step given below the code.

<div id="tabbed-toc">
<span class="loading">Loading, please wait for a moment...</span></div>
<br />
<script type="text/javascript">
var tabbedTOC = {
blogUrl: "http://www.blogspotpoint.com", // Enter your blog URL

showSummaries: false, // `true` to show the posts summaries
numChars: 200, // Number of summary chars

//define how many recent posts are to be marked by changing the number

Editing:-
1) To change the message which appears before the sitemap is loaded, change this "Loading, please wait for a moment..." line to your own.

2) Replace my blog URL with your blog URL by replacing http://www.blogspotpoint.com and those who are using the free blogspot domain name, change your country specific extension to .com at the end of the URL.

3) Color scheme is yellow and you may like to change it to your blog's color scheme. To change the yellow color just replace this #FFFC03 color code to your own which appears two times in the CSS code above.

Finally hit Publish button and visit your sitemap page to check if it is working or not. It should be 100% working for everyone.
